Did you know that there is a built-in file converter on your macOS? Well, I was also surprised when I discovered it.
I’ve been using 3rd party tools like Photoshop or Squash, and sometimes I even use websites that convert jpg to png or vice versa just to accomplish this.
How to Change Image File Extension on MacOS
But in this quick tutorial, I will show you how you can accomplish this task without even using those tools.
Select the image you want to convert the file.
In our example, I want to convert one of our images to .png from its original .jpg file extension.
Click the “more…” menu.
When you click the menu, it will show a mini window where it will show the submenus.
Click the Convert Image
Select the convert image, which is the second choice in the menu,
Choose the Format
In the Convert Image settings, in the format tab, select the file extension you want.
Select from JPEG, PNG or HEIF
In this section, you can choose any of the selections (JPEG, PNG or HEIF).
Choose file size
Next, you can select what image size you need from small, medium, large or actual size. In our case, we want to retain the actual size.
(Optional) Preserve Metadata
You also have the choice to retain the Metadata or not. This is useful if you don’t want the image to show the EXIF or metadata. Usually, if you take a photo using a smartphone or DSLR, it will have this data. When you upload to social media sites sometimes it gets this data.
Once you are done, just click Convert to PNG or any format you have selected.
Rename your files
After the conversion, you can now rename your file, and you are done!
Done!
As you can see, that’s how simple to convert an image to another extension. Although MacOS only have a limited file extension, most of these are the most commonly used file format.
There you have it! as you can see, it’s very easy. You can also do this in bulk by selecting multiple images and doing the same process.
In my next tutorial, I will also show how to convert to PDF and even remove the background of any images.
